28:58 and not a wasted second — Reign in Blood is still the tightest half hour in metal. Rick Rubin keeping it that lean was the bravest call on the record; most bands would have padded it to a "proper" album length. I came to it years after release and the opening of Raining Blood still rearranged how I hear rhythm. I write bars over a little rhythm game after work these days, and Lombardo's double-kick patterns on this record are a better lesson in pocket than any metronome. Oct 7th 1986 — worth marking every single year.
